Leopard [adjust] In 1788, Jean-Claude Delamtherie reported a black leopard that had been imported from Bengal and was held in the Tower of London. [1] Friedrich Albrecht Anton Meyer offered the scientific name Felis fusca (Indian leopard) for this cat in 1794. (P. p. fusca). [2] [3] At 1809, Georges Cuvier recorded a black leopard acquired from Java that was held in the Mnagerie du Jardin des plantes. Cuvier recommended the name Felis melas, which translates as "Javan leopard" (P. p. melas). [4] [3] By the late nineteenth century, India has often reported the presence of black and spotted leopard babies in the same litter. Black leopards were believed to be more prevalent in Travancore and the southern Indian highlands than in the rest of the nation. [5] In southern Myanmar, black leopards were very commonly observed. [6] By 1929, the Natural History Museum in London had gathered skins from black leopards in South Africa, Nepal, Assam, and Kanara in India. [7] Black leopards were formerly believed to be widespread over the Malay Peninsula and Java. [8]
