Grohl instantly returned to the boundaries of Queens of the Stone Age, drumming on their 2013 album...Like Clockwork, after the Foo Fighters announced their break in 2012. Additionally, he committed himself into making a documentary on the famed Sound City recording facility in Los Angeles. The film premiered to favorable reviews in early 2013 and was supported by a soundtrack titled Sound City: Real to Reel. The album included Grohl-directed jams with a range of Sound City veterans, as well as Paul McCartney. Not shortly after the album's release, the Foo Fighters announced the end of their break and the start of production on a new album.

Following the cancellation of a run of European performances, the band returned to action this weekend in Washington, D.C., where Grohl played from a big light-up throne while wearing a purple leg cast. According to Consequence of Sound, new video from the show sheds light on the throne's origins.
