Creation Groening named Homer after his father, who was called after the ancient Greek poet of the same name. [16] [17][18] Little else about Homer's persona was based on him, and Groening eventually named his own son Homer to demonstrate that the significance of Homer's name was irrelevant. [19] [20] Groening asserts "Homer began as a way for me to amuse and anger my actual father. My father was an athletic, creative, and bright director and writer who had just one thing in common with Homer: a like for doughnuts." [21] Although Groening has mentioned in multiple interviews that Homer was named after his father, he also revealed in other 1990 interviews that he was inspired to name Homer by a character in the 1939 Nathanael West classic The Day of the Locust. [22] [23] He stated in 2012, "That name was inspired by a minor character in the book The Day of the Locust... Because Homer was my father's name and I felt Simpson was a humorous name because it included the term âsimpâ, which is short for âsimpletonâ, I chose it." [24] Homer's middle initial "J," which stands for "Jay," is a "tribute" to cartoon characters such as Bullwinkle J. Moose and Rocket J. Squirrel from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, both of which received their middle initials from Jay Ward. [26]
