There is no attempt made here to match the interactive sophistication of video games such as Life Is Strange, in which the player is involved in fetch quests and must select from a variety of dialogue boxes during conversations that have both immediate and long-term effects on the unfolding narratives. There is no strategic balancing act, simply irritation at the prospect of Rowdy losing a life if you respond incorrectly. The primary joys of Cat Burglar are not interactive at all. Rather than that, the thrill comes from the deftly observed homages to cartoons from the golden period, when health and safety were unheard of and cartoon violence was a stuff of beautiful imagination. Rowdy attempts a high-wire walk into the museum property at one point, but the phone wire is snipped in half by a bird. Rowdy foolishly holds the wire parts together before realizing his error. Rowdy gets electrocuted after a single second in which his hopeless stare confronts the audience â similar to Gromit's after Wallace does something dumb or Sylvester the cat before he plummets to oblivion. While Rowdy is being cooked, the orchestra begins playing a rumba, angel wings emerge from his body, and the cat spirit begins shaking a pair of maracas.
Bo Welch's film follows two children, Conrad (Spencer Breslin) and Sally (Dakota Fanning), who often misbehave, and their single mother, Joan (Kelly Preston), who works in real estate, as she attempts to teach them proper behavior. Conrad ends up causing havoc in the home, and Joan seems to be dating their next-door neighbor, Lawrence (Alec Baldwin), which Conrad is not pleased about. The children discover a weird, human-sized cat in their home one day; this turns out to be "The Cat in the Hat" (an unpleasant Mike Myers), who creates havoc in their life once he enters. We watch the Cat engage in a variety of bizarre and annoying behaviors, to the point where you'd assume the film's storyline had gone for a stroll. Emmanuel Lubezki's vibrant cinematography is more eye-sore than eye-popping. There is no feeling of reality, but there is also no sense of whimsy... it exists in a fantasy universe where everything is animated to the point that you wonder why this is live action in the first place.

"Dirty Ho", "Time to Die". These are hardly the kinds of things you'd expect to hear from the Cat. Groin jokes, attempting to beat a youngster with a bat, insulting the children constantly, attempting to damage the dog. This film is everything that the book is not, and lacks the original character's charm. This cat seemed to be utilizing the children for his own amusement, rather than attempting to teach them how to have fun. The gags are dull, as are the characters. The colors were vibrant, the visuals were faithful to the novel, and some of the book's characters appeared in the film, but that alone is not incentive to see this film.
