Due to her overwhelming strength and speed, the Queen Mary was pressed into service during WWII to transport Allied soldiers to the front lines. At 1967, the Queen Mary was decommissioned and permanently moored in Long Beach, California, where she continues to function as a luxury hotel and living museum to this day. While the Queen Mary's illustrious past has given her many great titles, she has lately received a more infamous one. According to ghost accounts, the Queen Mary may be one of the most haunted ships in the world. The Illuminations on Deck 2 may be utilized as a lecture theatre, movie, or (by lowering an inventive dome from the ceiling) the world's only ocean-going planetarium. Most nights, a variety of newly released films are presented, and planetarium programs are held at different times during the day. Additionally, each journey often includes a lecture series or two on topics ranging from New York skyscrapers to pirates on the high seas to the design and construction of the QM2. Heard Throughout the World
Hydraulic cylinders are used to operate the doors, which are fed with fluid at a pressure of 700 lb by two strong steam pumps. Around two kilometers of copper tubing connects the pumps to the doors. Each door is equipped with a bell that sounds seven seconds before it starts to close.
